Entangled Boundaries (Possible)Interspecies Dialogues with Mycelium

Date: 26 October 2025, 11:00 – 26 October 2025, 17:00 Location: toitoidrome, Zendelingenstraat 38, 2140 Borgerhout

Come join us  in ' T_Cyberhol  and explore with us the exciting world of cyborg electronics, infused with the spirit of technofeminism! Together we can shape the future of technology in an inclusive and empowering way, short-circuiting patriarchal and neoliberal technologies.

In this session, we take the relationships between mycelium and their substrates as a lens to rethink ecological and social boundaries. From the gendered categorization of plants in Linnaean taxonomy to modernity’s separations of human and non-human life, we will examine how structural “separability” (da Silva, 2016) and the designation of certain beings as "worth less" (Braidotti, 1994) continue to shape the social frameworks that govern our relationships with other beings and the environment.

How might we imagine interspecies dialogue differently? What could be a tangible tool for such encounters? And is dialogue itself necessary, or does this desire risk reproducing existing hierarchies and power dynamics?

Starting in toi toi drome, we will build a low-tech, low-cost bio-synthesizer (https://lifepatch.id/Biosynth) : a CD4093-based circuit sensitive to moisture and the resistivity of organic matter. With this tool, we step outside and will explore possible interactions with mushrooms and other living beings in the urban environment.

with Yi Zhang (she/they) an interdisciplinary artist-researcher based in Eindhoven, working across video, installation, writing, and performance. Their research explores the entangled influences of human trade on urban ecosystems, the migration experiences of human and non-human beings. Through speculative fabulation, they reimagine ecological relationships and material afterlives, questioning structures of separation and extraction in modernity. SLARG is very excited to collaborate for this with Yi, who is an alumna of the 2023-24 Sint Lucas Advanced Master of Research program.
