RESEARCH PROJECT
Voices of Materials
September 2023
– ongoing
- Project kind: PhD
- Abstract: How can jewellery act as a performative medium to tell stories of material finitude on both planetary and local scales? This question emerges from my decade-long design practice, which explores the sourcing and valuing of materials, and my role as a jeweller in contemporary environmental discourse. Using an eco-critical lens, I explore materiality beyond the human timescale, rooted in the context of extractive ecologies.

In the PhD project "Voices of Materials", the process of making jewellery becomes a form of research - an exploration of how the object’s materiality can unfold the landscapes it originates from.
This research begins at one of the largest artificial beaches in the Netherlands, a coastal protection project. By exploring sand both literally and metaphorically, I translate its ecologies of preciousness and finitude into the tactile and visual form of jewellery.
