Sofyann Ben Youssef is a sound researcher, musicologist, and producer working at the intersection of cultural heritage, sonic archiving, and contemporary composition. Trained in musicology and Arabic music at the Higher Institute of Music in Tunis, his research examines how the cross-generational transmission of regional sounds informs and reshapes collective identity and how Change can be a tool for Heritage preservation. By treating traditional musical dialects as living practices rather than static artifacts, he explores how oral histories, mythologies, and rhythmic rituals translate into modern emancipatory frameworks.
Through projects including AMMAR 808, Bargou 08, and Kel Assouf, Ben Youssef brings localized traditions—such as North African folklore, Stambeli, and South Asian classical systems—into conversation with electronic soundscapes and visual media. His work considers sound as a primary medium for storytelling and heritage preservation, seeking ways to bridge distinct cultural spheres while respecting their localized roots.
His ongoing collaborative research is deeply committed to understanding the mechanics of cross-generational transmission. Ben Youssef is particularly drawn to projects that investigate how shared sonic experiences can dismantle colonial remnants, proposing new, pluralistic frameworks for collective awareness and a shared, decentralized global identity.
