Launch of Grounds #2
Learn about artistic research with Grounds #2, the latest edition of the artistic research journal from Sint Lucas Antwerpen School of Arts - KdG. Join us Saturday 15 May at 19:00 at Kunsthal Extra City, during the Antwerp Art Weekend, for an evening of drinks, music and ideas in motion.
Grounds isn’t just a journal. It’s a platform where thinking and doing meet. In Grounds #2, this turns into a space for experiments that explore how we connect with each other, our environment, and the more-than-human world, even when communication or technology falters.
Contributors in Grounds #2:
- Sammy Baloji – a self-written Kasala that links sugar, extractivism, and art history, weaving together material, story, and research into a performative and reflective practice.
- Shayma Nader – reconstructing the destroyed Palestinian village Saydoun through a walkable digital environment
- Myrthe Bokelmann & Cèlia Tort Pujol – embodied memory and “gut navigation” when technology fails
- Ruth Razan Loos – meditative calligraphy and the Koran as a “Text-as-Event”
- Loraine Furter – graphic novels exploring editorial failure and creative resilience
- Saskia Van der Gucht – filmic research on co-living, rootedness, and ecological scarcity
Grounds celebrates research as process. Through drawing, performance, walking, or writing, ideas are made tangible in the act of doing. The launch is your chance to meet contributors, exchange ideas, and experience the newest edition of this journal for artistic research.
After the launch, join us for a talk between curator Samuel Saelemakers and artist-researcher Sammy Baloji (20:00), alongside his exhibition Copper thread, Rubber thread, Sugar thread, which brings together tapestries, sound, and history in a meditation on colonial legacies in Central Africa.
